Day 36

Sunday was dedicated to project, how we’re all sick of the food here, where it becomes such a chore to order and think of food. When we went out, we saw more road side stalls where people would just place their goods on a mat upon the floor or have them on a table. Like a mini parser malam in Singapore. I managed to grab some posters which were selling at 2 yuan per poster!!! Omg… in Singapore a poster would generally cost me 4 bucks for 1 and now I managed to get them at 2 yuan per poster…. =DDDD

Jamie and I bought a few of our friend back in Singapore.. I hope she’ll be surprised…. =D
On our way back, Jamie and I went to explore a little- the newer dorms of the school which are built just beside ours and you can see the stark difference between our dorms and theirs. From the cold corridors to the toilets-a shared one unlike that provided for international students. It’s just really disturbing how everything looks older and cold even though the buildings were all built at the same time. (How interiors do wonders!) the conditions are better than that of the older dorms which are in terrible states with so many people cramping into 1 single room where the international students have the luxury of a twin shared room which is designed and toilets which are laid with travertino tiles and even a marble vanity top.

It made me wonder why the Chinese students deserve such conditions and why the school has made the two dorms so different… there are still so much differences between the culture of China and the western world where material comfort have a much greater emphasis upon.

And on our way back to our dorm, we saw a huge heap of what that appears to be rubbish and unwanted objects, yet a number of elderly people are rummaging through the pile with sticks and some even with their bare hands. Upon closer inspection, they were actually looking for unwanted objects which still have usable value and picking them out, cleaning them with a dirty cloth looking satisfied with their finds. That sight made my heart cringe. It made me reflect upon how excessively lavish is our lives. How much things we have wasted… how many more people are living a life worse than ours and yet we are complaining… sigh…
